Microaggressions Session #1 – Foundations: An ICoP Community Meeting
Microaggressions are the everyday slights, insults, putdowns, invalidations, and offensive behaviors that people from marginalized groups experience in daily interactions with people who may be unaware that they have engaged in demeaning ways. Avondine Hill, Special Assistant to the Dean on Diversity and Inclusion in the Leeds School of Business, and Becca Ciancanelli, Inclusive Pedagogy Lead, are hosting a three-session series on investigating microaggressions in the classroom. This first session will highlight how microaggressions have impacts on mental and physical health. Through examination of bias and stereotyping, participants will explore how to identify microaggressions in classroom settings.

Inclusive Community of Practice (ICoP) meetings connect equity-minded folks around campus to develop inclusive practices and policies in the classroom through sharing and curation of existing and collaboratively innovated knowledge. Weekly 75-minute meetings provide opportunities where faculty, staff and students gather to network and talk openly about diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice. These conversations are meant to be brave spaces where faculty, staff and students can work on developing inclusive practices for the classroom.
